Ainsley Maitland-Niles missed Arsenal’s last two teams of the day with an unrelated illness to Covid, but he was back with the squad in training this week.

While this adds to Mikel Arteta’s options in the short term, it might not last. There are reports that AS Roma are pursuing a January move for the player.

ESPN report that the Roma are in talks to sign the Maitland-Niles loan. The player is open to the decision and Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto has contacted Arsenal.

Roma want a loan with an option to buy and are discussing a potential four-year contract, but no fees yet.

athleticism confirm that Roma are interested in Maitland-Niles, although they say the move is still in its early stages.

The media add that Everton is still interested in the player, but would prefer to join Roma.

Maitland-Niles hasn’t played much since pushing to leave this summer.

In total, he has only 472 minutes for the campaign, or just over five matches. That’s less than a quarter of the minutes Arsenal have played.

Unless he thinks that will change, it seems likely the 24-year-old will push Arsenal to clear a loan in January.
