Pioneer students from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University in Makurdi held a protest on Monday against the institution’s inability to mobilize them for the National Youth Service Corps.
Protesters waving signs started the protest from the school gate to the vice-chancellor’s office to lobby their demand.
Student protesting spokesperson Samuel Igomu lamented that the pioneer established at the College of Food and Human Ecology, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics has not been able to attend the service since graduating in 2019 .
Igomu called on the school authority to step up and mobilize the 32 or so students for NYSC’s compulsory one-year program.
One of the protesters, who did not want his name printed, said it was worrying that after graduating two years ago, they were unable to make it to the service.
Meanwhile, the school’s vice-chancellor, Professor Anande Kimbir, who received the protesters, urged them to remain calm.
Kimbir told the protesting students that the case would be settled even though he admitted that an error had been made in the line of communication between the school and the National Universities Commission.
“But, that would work out. I can show you letters that I wrote ”, launched the vice-chancellor to the demonstrators.
