WATCHUNG – Borough voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, December 14 to vote on a $ 15 million school referendum to fund upgrades, renovations, alterations and other improvements to the two schools in the district – Bayberry Elementary School and Valley View Middle School.

All polling districts will be at the Fire Department Exemption Room, 31 Mountain Blvd. from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The school board voted 6-2 in September to bring the proposal to voters.

Projects include upgrades to security systems, acquisition and installation of accessories, furniture, equipment and site work.

The total cost is $ 14,978,371. Bayberry Elementary School work cost is $ 7,674,804 and Valley View Middle School work cost is $ 6,694,659.

The state Department of Education has determined that 96% of projects are eligible for debt service assistance. Therefore, the district would receive approximately $ 4,885,617, or 34% of the cost of eligible projects.

The referendum also includes $ 608,908 for upgrades to Valley View Middle School that are not eligible for state aid. All other works are covered by state aid.

For the assessed average value of a home of $ 730,568, the estimated annual tax impact would be $ 266.62.

Watchung School District serves more than 600 students. Kindergarten to Grade 4 students attend Bayberry Elementary School and Grades 5 to 8 students attend Valley View Middle School. Students from the district attend Watchung Hills Regional High School.

According to the district, projects at both schools include HVAC replacement and rehabilitation, exterior door upgrades, interior wall repair, roof replacement and rehabilitation, building security upgrades and additions, replacement of exterior walkways, replacement of lockers and lockers, technological upgrades,

electrical system upgrades and site ADA upgrades.

At Valley View Middle School, projects include acoustic upgrades to the music rooms, upgrades to the teachers’ room, conversion of the media center to Learning Commons, playground renovations, addition outdoor Learning Commons, replacing relocated storage space, and expanding and modifying an art studio. .

At Bayberry Elementary School, projects include replacing flooring, replacing ceilings, upgrading the plumbing system, replacing mats for the media center, and improving site lighting. .
