Kyriece Brooks has a vision to make a positive impact on young people.
âMy role is to engage them and educate them about mental health,â Brooks said. âI’m going to give them a platform to release their negative emotions in a safe and productive space. “
YouthMOVE Ohio is a joint program between NAMI Ohio and NAMI Lorain County.
The Addiction and Mental Health Services Administration and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction fund YouthMOVE Ohio.
The Brooks post will strengthen support for youth in northern Ohio and provide outreach services to youth in Lorain County.
The native of Lorain graduated from Lorain High School in 2013.
Brooks has been advocating for young people since 2014, when he founded Stop the violence Lorain Ohio.
Stop the Violence works to educate, support and motivate citizens of all ages to create change, he said.
âI started Stop the Violence because I lost a family member to homicide and it bothered me,â Brooks said. âAt the time, there weren’t enough resources or people available to provide comfort in this time of transition. “
Brooks said he never set out to start an organization.
âIt was meant to be a one-time event where we would commemorate all the people Lorain had lost to the violence,â he said. âWe had different speakers telling their stories, and I realized then that he was so much bigger than me. “
Brooks is also the director of Stop the Violence and he works with residents to advocate for their interests and the community.
âWe will support anything positive in the community,â he said. âWe try to involve churches and schools in educating young people about all types of violence. “
As a youth pastor, Brooks said he has a heart for young people.
âBeing in the foster care system and going through what I went through as a child, I felt rejected and counted,â he said. âI see so many young people feeling this, and I don’t want them to.
âI don’t want them to feel like me or fall in the same dark place. So, I will help and encourage them in any way I can.
Brooks also volunteers with Voices for Children as guardian ad litem court appointed special advocate to transform the lives of abused and neglected children.
He is the foster parent of a 13 year old son.
Brooks said his goal is to create change in the community and enrich the lives of others through words, actions and service.
