NYSC Member Donates Food, Offers Free Medical Care to Bayelsa’s Widows


As part of the Community Development Project (CDS), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Olusile Joy Omotola donated food, clothing and offered free medical checkups to approximately 71 widows in the community. Ovom in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of ​​Bayelsa State.

Olusile, who hails from Ogun state but is currently doing his one-year compulsory national service in Bayelsa state, said the gesture was part of his contribution to improving the welfare of elderly widows in the society.

She said she was moved after a critical study of the situation of widows in the community, where she realized they needed proper meals, proper health care and good clothing.

She contacted them through her project called “New Year for Widows”.

She explained that the aim of the project is to provide widows in the community with some of the basic amenities, to create a healthy environment for them to support each other through the period of widowhood, to celebrate their strength and to encourage them to keep pushing for the next few years.

She also coached them on how to take care of their general well-being, where she advised them to regularly check their blood pressure, blood sugar, among others.

Among the free services offered by the corps member were health education/discussion on diabetes and high blood pressure for the elderly, free consultation and check-up for widows on blood sugar and blood pressure, donation of packaging and foodstuffs, including bags of rice and garri.
