The Srirangapatna Dasara Jamboo Savari procession was canceled because the elephant Gopalaswamy, who carried the wooden howdah on his back, panicked during the celebration. The three-day Srirangapatna Dasara festival began on Saturday.
Gopalaswamy lost control due to the loud noise of crackers popping during the procession to Srirangapatna. However, an alert mahout, a kaavadi, and forestry department officials managed to calm the elephant. The authorities canceled the Jamboo Savari and the idol of Chamundeshwari Devi was taken in procession in a silver chariot. Thousands of people gathered for the procession. Fortunately, there was no untoward incident.
Gopalaswamy and Kaveri were brought from Mysuru to Srirangapatna Dasara. Gopalaswamy panicked a few minutes after the seer Nirmalanandanatha Swami from Adichunchanagiri mutt offered ‘pushparchane’ as the token of the start of the Dasara procession at Bannimanatp in Kirangur here. Youth Empowerment and Sports Minister KC Narayana Gowda and Deputy Commissioner S Aswathi were present.
Veterinarian Dr Ramesh, who takes care of the elephants in Dasara, said that “Gopalaswamy had undergone rigorous training for the Dasara procession, but he panicked from the noise of the crackers and the procession was canceled in order to avoid any untoward incident.
