Utah State second in West Mountain with 177 varsity-athlete honors

LOGAN, Utah – The State of Utah finished second in Mountain West as the USU student-athletes won a total of 177 MW Scholar-Athlete, as announced by league offices Thursday. The Aggies were second behind New Mexico, which led the league with 187 total MW researcher-athlete accolades.

The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The athletic contribution / participation requirement was omitted for this award this year due to the impact of COVID-19.

Wyoming followed the Aggies with 162 varsity athletic accolades, while Colorado State (158) and Nevada (152) rounded out the top five. UNLV (147), Fresno State (130), Boise State (129), San Diego State (84), Air Force (78), and San José State ( 64) followed as Hawaii (10) and Colorado College (8) Affiliate Members.

Utah State topped the league in five sports as women’s track and field won 43 top varsity conference accolades, as were men’s track and field with 30, women’s cross country with 17, cross- men’s country with 12 and men’s basketball with six. The Aggies also had double-digit winners in soccer (15), women’s soccer (15) and softball (11), while Utah State’s total of 177 was topped by volleyball (8 ), women’s basketball (7), women’s tennis (5) and men’s tennis and men’s golf with four each.

The state of Utah had a total of 26 student-athletes on the list with a GPA of 4.0, while 48 student-athletes had a score of 3.95 or better.

In the 2020-21 academic year, Utah State won a total of 460 All Conference and / or MW Scholar-Athlete Academic Honors.
