The first program of its kind in Louisiana, Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) was founded in 2004 and today offers mentoring, education, job preparation and enrichment programs to youth from Greater New Orleans to from six program sites.

“Our main goal is to empower young people to improve their lives and the lives of others,” says Darrin McCall, Program Manager, LCSW. “The strength of our work lies in our ability to build strong relationships with youth, their families and the community.

YEP’s unique approach to mentoring includes the provision of holistic and one-on-one case management services in addition to relationship-based mentoring services. Youth advocacy by passionate YEP staff provides program participants with the support they need to navigate systems and access essential services.

Due to the new challenges posed by the pandemic and Hurricane Ida, YEP is currently focused on providing one-on-one academic support and additional mentoring services to young people who have endured the challenges of virtual learning. The organization also continues to meet the basic needs of young people and families as they go through difficult times.

“We’re always expanding our programming to make sure we’re ready for the next crisis, because so many of the young people we serve don’t have a safety net. The support they receive from YEP is critical to their quality of life, ”says McCall.

YEP also operates two public companies – a full-service bicycle store (Bike Works) and a thrift store (Thrift Works) – which serve as training spaces for interns and trainees aged 16 to 24 engaged in the services. preparation for employment and employability of YEP. as well as a fundraising arm for YEP. Located on Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., Bike Works and Thrift Works are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
